On Monday we celebrated B’s birthday at her school with all these cool buds (B is one out of two girls in her class)!  It was an unforgettable experience that made me so grateful for the environment she spends time in. It began with B leaving the classroom and returning with a star crown and rainbow cape.  Ms. Faith lite 4 candles and told this story:

A little star child was playing ball with other star children and the ball rolled away. B ran after it and noticed a hole below the clouds and she looked down. Through the hole she saw Andy and I and wanted to join. Her Mother Angel told her it wasn’t time yet.  B would continually check on us watching my stomach grow. Then one day Mother Angel told her it was time and she came down to us.

I was in awe. I love it! After we left, when I started the car the song playing was: God only knows by the Beach Boys. This was the last song we used in B’s slideshow for her first birthday. I started to cry. I’m over 6 months pregnant, hormonal, and my eldest is turning 4 this month. There is no holding back emotions.

This week, my little bud, you experienced more contact with your sister (Lucy) than ever before. Thanks for providing her comfort/support and for also not deflating.

Our final day in Fort Lauderdale would best be described as…windy. Not to be deterred, we started off the day surrounded by … BIRDS at the aviary at the Flamingo Gardens. After brunch, the whipping wind and cool temperatures were naturally not enough to deter the girls from the beach or the pool. (Fortunately, I delegated Andy to pool duty and kept myself warm on the sideline.) We’re going to start making winter vacations to warm locales a more frequent thing!

Day two was full of encounters with Florida’s wildlife. We started the day being greeted by three iguanas sunning themselves on the sidewalk by the nature center we visited. From there, we went to a quiet beach at a nearby state park, where we pestered by a few very persistent raccoons interested in sharing our PB&Js. For less cuddly animals, we also saw a few curled up jellyfish on the beach. After all that nature, we thought we were going to a quiet seaside dinner, but it turns out that “Lauderdale by the Sea” is a party zone for fifty-somethings.

Adventure, thy name is Fort Lauderdale. Our first day in (relatively) tropical locale was action packed. The BlueFoot Pirate Tour turned out to be the best decision we made all trip–Brooklyn is still raving about her run-in with Barnacle Bill. We rounded the day out with some beaching and dinner downtown. First day of family vacation goes in the win column!
